Martha Marcy May Marlene is a powerful psychological thriller starring Elizabeth Olsen as Martha, a young woman trying to flee from a cult and its charismatic leader (John Hawkes). The opening scene shows Martha on the phone to her sister Lucy (Sarah Paulson) asking her to come and pick her up, we believe all is well, but you soon find out its not.
Seeking help from her estranged older sister Lucy (Sarah Paulson) and brother-in-law (Hugh Dancy), Martha is unable to reveal the truth about her disappearance and her past life. As the film progresses, we learn that Martha has joined what seems to be a friendly hippy commune of men and woman living off the land, sharing clothes, sharing bodies, sharing food but as the movie progresses and bouncing between the past and the present the true nature of the commune comes to life.
I watched this movie twice while in the states, it’s fantastic and holds up well even better the second time around, Olsen’s performance is superb as is the script and cinematography, I urge you all to go and watch this independent film, and in the meantime stay away from tree loving hippies!
