It’s Margaret vs Marilyn, Scorcese vs Silent and Clooney vs Pitt at this year’s Oscars (snooze)!
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences pulled some curlies this morning at 5.00am Australian time in its nominee list for the Academy Awards, with the 5,783 voting members highlighting specific performances while snubbing the directors behind the films, and in other cases choosing a film and ignoring its stars.
Best Picture nominations are War Horse, Hugo, Moneyball, The Help, The Artist, The Descendants, Midnight in Paris, The Tree of Life & Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.
It was great to see the legendary Gary Oldman in the running for best actor for his role in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Kenneth Branagh for his supporting role in My Week with Marilyn. But ughhh, why Rooney Mara was nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Tilda Swinton wasn’t is beyond me, don’t even get me started on why Ryan Gosling wasn’t in the group best supporting actor for his role in Ides of March. But on the flipside, Melissa McCarthy was nominated for best supporting actress for her role in Bridesmaids so the world is a better place again.
