Maggie Returns with a Dildo

Article by James
What has happened to the delightful Maggie Gyllenhaal you ask? We last remember her most for her role as Batman’s Rachel in Christopher Nolan’s 2008 The Dark Knight, but she also played a small role in Sam Mendes’ severely under-rated (and very under-seen) 2009 film, Away We Go. Then she got up the duff and took a little time off. So it is with great pleasure  that we see her return to our screens in Oz in a film called Hysteria, released in cinemas July 12th.

If opening weekend at the end of May in the US is anything to go by ($230,457 – Yow!), we may see this flick go straight to DVD rather than cinema, but the story goes as such; “In Victorian London, the young Dr. Mortimer Granville, struggles to establish himself. He is hired by a doctor to investigate treatments for women diagnosed with female hysteria using ‘pelvic massage’. The doctor’s two daughters develop an interest in the young Dr. Granville, each attempting to woo him.” A romantic comedy about the origins of the vibrator no less – so alas, I used dildo to be crass as that was invented hundreds of years before. Not that I know anything about that…

Also starring the equally charming Hugh Dancy as Dr Granville, this film actually looks like a kooky period piece with a twist; or should that be vibration. And even though Maggie has had a somewhat mixed-bag of career choices (excluding 2001’s Donnie Darko with brother Jake, 2002’s unbelievably captivating Secretary, and both above), this looks like one of her odd on paper, great on film endeavors. Screw box-office figures, go see!
