You have to love Annette Bening. With starring roles in cool flicks like 1996’s hilarious Mars Attacks!, 1999’s visionary Sam Mendes directed American Beauty, to 2004’s Being Julia, Bening is a luminous actor without dispute. In recent years we have seen entertaining and light with the under-rated 2008’s The Women, to moving indie dramas such as 2009’s Mother and Child with Naomi Watts, and 2010’s much applauded The Kids are Alright. This woman, this great actor who is in her fifties, sure is firing. Who said Streep is the only one still hitting it out of the park for the ladies over fifty???
Currently starring in Ruby Sparks, playing in cinemas across Oz, Bening is getting rave reviews for this little flick from the Director of the charming 2006 film, Little Miss Sunshine. And next she is teaming up with Kristen Wiig (2011’s Bridesmaids) playing her Mum. Here’s the drill: A playwright stages a suicide in an attempt to win back her ex, only to wind up in the custody of her gambling-addict mother.
Released late this year, Imogene co-stars Darren Criss (TV’s Glee) and ole’ coke-and-pet-lovin’ Natasha Lyonne (several American Pie flicks). Bening seems perfectly cast as the crazy mother to Wiig’s usual straight-faced hilarity. I say we may just have another winner!
